One of the most challenging aspects of any business is making sure your product is both reliable and safe. There is “zero tolerance” for mistakes; the customer simply demands a flawless product. If you can’t meet these demands, the customer always has alternatives. That is why it is extremely critical to get it right the first time.
Throughout the design, development and manufacturing of your product, it is important to incorporate performance testing of materials, components and assemblies. By testing earlier in the design/development process, you are assured the least amount of risk during the manufacturing process. If you have electronics in your product, early testing can identify weakness in printed circuit board design and components. Don’t forget to pay attention to the materials. Every product is made up of several different materials and each material has different characteristics. How will these materials interact when subjected to temperature extremes? Finally, what quality controls will you put in place to ensure the final product is correct.
After your product makes it to market the focus shifts to customer service and satisfaction. You don’t plan for failures but they happen nonetheless. Field failure should be analyzed in order to determine the cause and steps needed to prevent reoccurrences. |
