In Materials Science metallography techniques can be developed and applied to study and characterize metals and other engineering materials, including ceramics and polymers.  Optical microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) can be utilized for the interpretation of microstructures from prepared metallographic specimens. The microstructural features of metals that can be characterized are:

·         Solidification Structures -  of pure metals, solid solutions, eutectic alloys, steels, aluminum alloys and copper alloys

·         Transformation Structures - resulting from precipitation from solid solutions, spinodal structures, eutectoid structures, bainitic structures, martensitic structures, peritectic structures, and ordered structures

·         Deformation and Annealing Structures - resulting from plastic deformation, plastic deformation at elevated temperatures and from recovery, recrystallization, and grain growth

·         Textured Structures

·         Crystal Structures
